This policy explains what Reloot stores on your device when you use reloot.co.uk or the Reloot app, and why. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains what we do with personal data generally.
1. The short version
Reloot does not advertise to you and does not track you across other websites. There is no Google Analytics, no advertising pixel, no third-party tracker and no profile of you sold or shared with anyone. Everything listed below is either needed for the site to work at all, or is a convenience that exists because of something you did — and almost all of it stays on your own device and is never sent to us.
That is also why you will not find a wall asking you to accept cookies before you can use the site. The law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003) requires your consent for storage that is not strictly necessary; it requires clear information about the rest. We show you a notice once, we keep this page, and we let you clear everything from your browser whenever you like.
2. What "cookies" means here
A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser. Browsers offer two other places a site can keep something — localStorage (survives closing the tab) and sessionStorage (cleared when you close it) — and the law treats all three the same way. Reloot uses very few real cookies and mostly uses those two, so this page lists everything rather than only the cookies.
In the iPhone and Android apps there are no cookies at all. The same kinds of information are kept in the app's own storage on your phone, and uninstalling the app removes them.
3. Strictly necessary
These are needed for the site to do what you asked it to. They cannot be turned off, because without them you could not stay signed in, pay, or see the current version of a page.
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
Keeps you signed in. It holds your session, encrypted, and is what the site shows to prove it is you.
HOW LONG
Until you sign out or it expires
WHAT
Where you were headed
WHAT IT IS FOR
The page you were on when you chose "Continue with Apple", so you land back on it afterwards.
HOW LONG
The sign-in round trip only
WHAT
Which version of the site you have
WHAT IT IS FOR
So a tab you left open for days picks up the current version once, instead of checking on every page.
HOW LONG
Until you close the tab
WHAT
__stripe_mid, __stripe_sid
WHERE
Cookies, set by Stripe
WHAT IT IS FOR
Fraud prevention on card payments. Set only when you open the card dialog at checkout — never on an ordinary page.
HOW LONG
1 year / 30 minutes
Stripe is our payment provider and sets those two itself, under their own names, so you can find them in your browser's cookie list; Stripe's own privacy policy covers them. We do not read them. Everything else in that table is ours, kept on your device, and named here for what it does rather than for whatever it is called in the code.
4. Things you chose
These exist because of something you did. They are stored on your device and not sent to us; we cannot read them, and clearing your browser data removes them.
WHAT
Your location and radius
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
The town and distance you set, so the site does not ask again every visit
HOW LONG
Until you change or clear it
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
The "Where you left off" row on your home page
HOW LONG
The last few listings you opened
WHAT
An unfinished listing
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
A draft you started on a phone, so you can finish it later
HOW LONG
Until you publish or delete it
WHAT
A dismissed announcement
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
So a notice you closed stays closed
HOW LONG
Until the notice changes
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
So the cookie notice does not come back every page
HOW LONG
Until you clear your browser
WHERE
Stored on your device
WHAT IT IS FOR
If the site breaks while you are offline, the report waits here until it can be sent
HOW LONG
Until sent, or 50 reports
5. Measurement
We count page views with Vercel Web Analytics, which is the only measurement on the site. It is deliberately the cookieless kind: it sets no cookie, stores nothing on your device, and gives us the page, the site you came from, your country and your device type. It cannot be tied back to you or followed from one site to another. The apps do not use it at all.
Separately, and only for members, Reloot counts a listing's views and a boost's impressions once per hour. For a signed-in member that is counted against the account; for a visitor it is counted against a short-lived key derived from the network address, which is deleted within 24 hours and is never stored alongside anything that identifies you.
6. Personalisation, and how to turn it off
Two things change what you are shown, and both are yours to control:
•
Interests you chose at sign-up or in Profile → Interests. Declared by you, changeable or clearable at any time.
•
Feed personalisation, a per-category tally that goes up slightly when you search or open a category and fades over 30 days. It is off-switchable in Profile → Preferences → "Personalise my Feed"; turning it off clears the tally.
Neither is used for advertising, neither is shared, and neither leaves Reloot.
7. Other sites' content
Two parts of Reloot load something from elsewhere, and those servers see your IP address the way any site you visit would:
•
OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles on the location screen, and unpkg serves the map library itself.
•
Stripe serves the card form at checkout, inside its own frame.
They set nothing on your device except the two Stripe cookies in section 3.
8. Managing it yourself
Every browser lets you clear cookies and site data and block them for a site — usually under Settings → Privacy. Clearing Reloot's data signs you out and forgets your location, your recently viewed and any draft; nothing else is lost, because everything that matters lives in your account. In the apps, the equivalent is signing out or uninstalling.
If you block storage entirely you can still browse Reloot, but you cannot stay signed in, so buying, selling and messaging will not work.
9. Changes and contact
We update this page when we change what the site stores. It is dated at the top, and a material change is announced in the app the same way a change to our Terms is.
