Terms of Service
Last updated: 17 September 2026 · Version 0.10 (draft for legal review)
This is a working draft written alongside the product. It describes how the app actually works today and the fee model we intend to launch. It must be reviewed by a solicitor before the app is released to the public. Items in [square brackets] are placeholders.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
Reloot ("we", "us") is a mobile app that lets people in the UK list items for sale and buy from each other locally. It is operated by [Company name], registered in England and Wales under company number [number], at [registered address]. You can contact us at [support email].
These terms are a contract between you and us about your use of the app. By creating an account you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
2. Who can use the app
You can look around the app — browse listings, search, open a listing's own page — without an account. These terms and the Privacy Policy still apply to that use. Buying, saving, messaging a seller, reporting, selling, and anything on the profile tab need an account.
You must be 18 or over. Buying and selling on the app creates legal contracts, and some categories (vehicles, bladed tools) have their own age rules.
You must be in the United Kingdom.
You may hold one account. We may refuse, suspend or close accounts that break these terms or that we reasonably believe are being used for fraud, harm or illegal activity.
3. Your account
Keep your details accurate and your password private. You are responsible for what happens through your account. Passwords must be at least 10 characters with upper and lower case letters and a number; we will ask you to confirm your email address (or mobile number) with a code before you can use the account. If you sign in by mobile, the codes we text you are for you alone — never share them, and tell us if your number changes hands.
You can also sign up or log in with an Apple, Google or Facebook account instead of a password. Doing so confirms your identity through that provider and may share your name, email address and profile photo with us, on the same terms as if you had typed them in yourself.
Creating an account by any method requires you to actively agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy — you cannot continue without checking that box. Choosing to receive personalised offers by email is entirely separate and optional, and you can change your mind at any time in Profile → Notifications.
You are known to other members by a username. Your username, photo, location area and verification badges are public; your full name, email address, mobile number and precise location are private and are shown only to the other party of a sale you have agreed (so you can complete the handover or delivery), and to our team. You may also set an optional display name in Edit profile, shown ahead of your username (with your username underneath) on your own profile, your shop and a chat you're in — it is not unique, not verified, can be changed once every 14 days, and does not replace your username anywhere else in the app; we may remove one that impersonates another person, a business, or our staff.
Usernames are 3–20 characters (lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores), must not impersonate another person, business or our staff, and must not be offensive, misleading or contain contact details. You may change your username once every 30 days. We may change or remove a username that breaks these rules and we may refuse or reclaim reserved names.
Contact details shared with you for a sale are for that sale only. Using them for anything else (marketing, contacting the person about other matters, passing them on) is a breach of these terms and may be unlawful.
You can tell us which categories you are interested in (at sign-up, or later in Profile → Interests). This only changes what your home page shows you; it is private, optional, and you can change or clear it at any time.
You can delete your account at any time from Profile. See section 14 for what happens to your data.
4. We are a venue, not a party to sales
We provide the place where buyers and sellers find each other and talk. The contract for any sale is between the buyer and the seller. We do not own, hold, inspect or deliver items, and we are not the seller's agent. We do not guarantee that a listing is accurate, that a seller will complete a sale, or that a buyer will pay — although our verification, escrow and review features exist to reduce those risks.
5. Listings
When you create a listing you promise that:
you own the item or have the right to sell it;
the title, photos (at least one, up to 10 free, or 30 with the photo top-up), description, price and attributes are accurate and not misleading;
the item is not on our prohibited list (section 6) and complies with any category rules (section 7);
if you sell as a business (regularly, for profit, or as a trade), you say so in your profile. Business sellers have extra legal duties to consumers, including the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and must give buyers their business name and address.
We may edit, hide or remove listings that break these terms, and we may ask for proof of ownership or identity before a listing goes live.
6. Prohibited items and conduct
You must not list or try to sell: live animals of any kind (including rehoming, adoption or “free to a good home”); weapons, ammunition or bladed items to under-18s; drugs, medicines or anything requiring a licence you do not hold; alcohol or tobacco; counterfeit or stolen goods; recalled or unsafe products; adult content; personal data; anything illegal to sell in the UK. You must not use the app to harass, threaten, discriminate, spam, scam, or contact users for anything other than a genuine sale. We keep the full list in the app's Help section and may update it.
Your shop. Your shop page carries a banner and a look you choose. The banner must be your own photo or one you have the right to use, must not show other people without their consent, and must not be used for anything that would be prohibited in a listing. Your Trade Rank level and the Trusted Trader badge are calculated by us from completed sales, reviews and identity checks; they cannot be bought, transferred or requested, and we may recalculate or remove them if sales or reviews are found to be fake. Following a shop only signals that you want to hear about its new listings; unfollow at any time.
7. Category rules
Animals. The app is not a place to sell, rehome or advertise animals. Any listing for a live animal is removed and the account may be closed (section 6).
Vehicles. Sellers must state mileage, MOT status and known faults honestly, and must not sell a vehicle they do not own or that is subject to outstanding finance without disclosing it.
Electronics. Devices must not be blocked, blacklisted, or locked to an account the buyer cannot access.
We may add category rules and require attestations when you list.
8. Buying and selling safely
Agree the details in the app's chat so there is a record.
Meet in a public place, check the item before paying, and never pay outside the app's protected payment when it is available.
We never ask for your password, and we never message you asking for payment.
A seller may allow offers below the asking price on a listing. A buyer can propose a price; either side can accept, decline or counter it. Accepting an offer agrees a price — it is not a payment and does not reserve the item against anyone else. Once accepted, arrange payment and collection in chat the same as any other sale.
9. Payments, protection and fees
Buy it now and checkout. On a regular (non-vehicle, non-service) listing, "Buy it now" creates a real order at a price the app calculates for you: the item price, delivery (if you choose it over collection), and a Reloot fee you pay as the buyer for the protection below — never the seller. The fee is 70p, plus 5% of the first £250 of the item price, plus 3.5% of any part of the price above £250 (the bands are marginal, so there is never a jump at £250); you always see the exact figure, both as a breakdown at checkout and as a smaller "with fees & delivery" line under the price wherever you see it — that line and the loot-bag total include locker delivery (the cheapest option and the checkout default) where the seller offers delivery; choosing home delivery at checkout changes the delivery part, and collection is free. Sellers keep 100% of the item price.
Your order is held in escrow: once you confirm delivery (or 48 hours pass after dispatch with no problem reported), funds release automatically to the seller.
If the item is not as described, damaged, or never arrives, use Report a problem on the order within that 48-hour window; this pauses the release and opens a dispute for our team to work with both of you, which may include a refund.
Cancelling before an order is paid, or a seller failing to dispatch, is handled the same way as any dispute.
Fees are inclusive of VAT where it applies.
Paid extras for sellers. Everything a seller needs is free: listing, photos (up to 10 per listing), messaging, offers, the shop page, reviews and quote requests. Optional extras are priced on the screen where you buy them and charged once, through the same card payment as a purchase: a Boost (3 or 7 days in the sponsored slots on the Feed, Home and the Chats tab), a Highlight (a cobalt frame on your card for 7 days), a Bump (relists the item as new; one is free every 30 days), a photo top-up (up to 30 photos on that listing), and Reloot Pro for trades (a 30-day pass that does not renew on its own). Boosted content is always marked Boosted. Every boost gets an equal share of the sponsored slots for its whole run: slots are filled in turn by whichever boost has had the least exposure for its time live, never by who paid most, and a boost is never shown to its own seller, to someone who has blocked them, or inside a conversation. If a boost has been shown fewer than 200 times when it ends, we extend it free until it has. Extras are not refundable once they have started, except where the law says otherwise or the extra could not be delivered. A boosted or highlighted listing that is removed for breaking these terms loses the extra without a refund.
Listing fees for vehicle and service adverts. Vehicle adverts (cars, motorcycles, vans) and service adverts are classified adverts with no fee on the sale itself. They are free to list while we launch. When that changes we will say so in the app at least 30 days beforehand, and the price will be shown on the Publish button before you pay. A paid advert runs for the period shown (four weeks for a vehicle, 30 days for a service) and is not live until the fee is paid; an unpaid advert stays in My listings where you can pay for it or remove it. When the period ends the advert comes off the app (we tell you two days before and when it happens) and you can relist it from My listings: the first relist of each advert is free, after that the fee applies again. A Reloot Pro pass covers the service advert fee (up to five live adverts on Pro, unlimited on Pro Plus).
Taking a card payment itself. The order, escrow and dispute system above is real and live. The one piece still being connected is the payment provider that actually takes your card: until it is switched on, checkout tells you honestly that card payments are not yet available for that order, and you and the seller should agree payment directly in chat the same way as any other sale, with all the usual cautions in section 8. We will tell you in the app the moment card payments go live, and these terms will be updated to remove this notice.
Vehicles and services. Vehicle listings stay chat-only (agree the sale, meet, pay and collect yourselves) and are never bought through checkout. Services use Get a quote, which sends your requirements to the seller in chat — no order or fee is created until you agree a price between you. A services seller may choose to show a business phone number on their advert with a Call button; that number is public on the advert and must be a number you are entitled to publish for business enquiries — never someone else's, and never used to move a buyer off the platform to avoid our rules.
10. Verification
Badges such as "Verified Profile" (identity), "Phone Verified", "Address Confirmed" and "Business Verified" mean we have completed the check described in the app's Verification section for that account. All of them show on a member's profile; "Verified Profile" and "Business Verified" also show on each of their listings. They are a statement about a check we ran on a date, not a guarantee of a person's honesty or of any item. Do not rely on a badge instead of seeing the item.
You confirm your mobile number yourself with a text-message code. For the other checks you send a request from Profile → Verification status; a member of our team then contacts you in the app to complete it. Do not put identity numbers or photographs of documents in the request note — we will ask for anything we need through a secure route and tell you how it is handled. We may refuse a badge, and we remove one if we later find the check was passed on false information.
11. Messages and content
The Feed. You can post to the Feed — an update about your shop, with photos; a "looking for" post saying what you want to buy; or a repost of someone else's post — and heart or repost other members' posts. Posts are public: anyone using the app can read them, including people without an account, and they may be shown to members who do not follow you when our ranking thinks they will be interested (the Privacy Policy explains how). Do not post phone numbers, email addresses or other ways to deal off the app — buyers and sellers are only protected when they use it — and do not post links unless your account is established. We limit how much a brand-new account can post and who sees it until it has been around a while or verified a phone number; this is to stop spam and does not affect ordinary use. Strong language is not removed but is hidden until a reader chooses to see it. Signed-in members can comment on posts; the post's author can remove any comment on their post. You can block a member from their shop or any of their posts: neither of you will see the other's posts or comments, neither can message the other, and any follows between you are removed. Every post and comment has a Report option; a post or comment reported by several members in good standing is hidden while our team looks at it. You can delete your own posts at any time; reposts of a deleted post go with it. We may remove a post or comment that breaks these terms, and repeat spam or abuse can close the account (section 13).
You keep ownership of what you post, and you give us a licence to store, show and (for public listings) distribute it so the app can work. Photos sent in a chat are visible only to the two people in that conversation, and to our team if the conversation is reported. We may review messages, photos and listings to investigate reports, enforce these terms, and comply with the law. Do not share other people's personal information without their agreement, and do not send photos of documents, cards or other people.
12. Reviews
Reviews can only be left by the buyer in a completed sale — one the seller has recorded as sold to that buyer in the app — and the database refuses any other review. A review shows the buyer's first name, a star rating and a "Verified purchase" tag on the seller's profile; the buyer can edit or withdraw it. Writing, buying or soliciting fake reviews — or offering incentives for reviews — is prohibited and is a breach of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. We remove reviews that break this rule and may close the accounts involved.
13. Reporting, complaints and enforcement
Every listing and chat has a Report option. We review every report, act on the ones that break our rules or the law, and keep records of what we did.
What we may do. Depending on how serious the problem is, and whether it has happened before, our moderation team may: hide or remove a listing; add a warning to an account; suspend an account for a set number of days (you can still sign in and read, but cannot list or message); or close an account permanently and remove its listings. Where a sale is disputed, we may decide the dispute in favour of the buyer or the seller, or dismiss it, based on the evidence both sides give us.
How we do it. Only trained staff with a moderator, developer or admin role can take these actions. Every action is recorded in an audit log with who took it, when, and why. Staff can only read a private conversation when one of its participants has reported it, and that access is logged. We do not read private messages otherwise.
Appeals. If you think we got a decision wrong — including removing your content, suspending or closing your account, or a dispute outcome — you can complain to [support email] and we will reply within [14] days. We take our duties under the Online Safety Act 2023 seriously and publish how we handle illegal and harmful content in our Help section.
14. Ending your account
You can delete your account from Profile → Delete account. We remove your profile, listings, saved items and read receipts straight away. We keep messages visible to the people you exchanged them with, reports you were involved in, and records of protected sales for as long as the law requires (typically six years for transaction records), then delete them.
We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, with an explanation and a route to complain (section 13), except where the law prevents us from explaining.
15. Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else the law does not let us limit. Otherwise, because we are a venue and not a party to sales, we are not liable for losses arising from a sale between users, from items listed by users, or from things outside our reasonable control. Where we are liable, our total liability to you in any 12 months is limited to the greater of £100 or the fees you paid us in that period. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.
16. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms when the app changes or the law does. We will show you the new version in the app and, for material changes, give you at least 14 days' notice before they apply. If you keep using the app after that, the new terms apply.
17. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction (if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also use your local courts). If we cannot resolve a complaint with you, you may be able to use alternative dispute resolution; details are in the Help section.
